FRACKVILLE, SCHUYLKILL CO. (WOLF) — A former manager of the State Correctional Institution in Frackville has been charged with sexual assault following allegations of an affair with an inmate.
Jennifer Newberry, 48, of Frackville, was charged with institutional sexual assault, evidence tampering and related contraband charges after investigators said they discovered an affair between her and an inmate assigned to her.
In August 2023, SCI Frackville requested assistance from the Bureau of Investigations and Intelligence of Newberry, a unit manager, was having an "inappropriate relationship" with an inmate, who was assigned as a worker for her.
The affidavit says that in July 2023, the security office received information that an inmate was "spending too much time" in Newberry's office. Also that month, Newberry had suddenly resigned her position, raising suspicions.
Through interviews and reviewing surveillance, investigators discovered that Newberry and the inmate had known each other since December 2021, after he was assigned as her clerk.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 6.
