Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Last weekend, a local high school wrestler beat multiple Division One college wrestlers to win a regional tournament.
High school sophomore Bo Bassett won the 133-pound Clarion Open title on Sunday.
Bassett beat Pitt redshirt freshman Vinnie Santanello in the final.
Santanello is ranked in the top 15 in his weight class.
Bassett said he was nervous to wrestle against that level of competition, but that the pressure made him perform better.
“Something that I’ve always done when I was wrestling growing up is I’ve always bumped up age groups, so if I was eight years old, I would normally bump to the ten year. If I was nine or ten years old, I would bump into junior high. And that was just something that my dad had always done for me. He'd always bump me up and we're always trying to chase challenges. So, I’m only in 10th grade and only a sophomore, but when I heard that I could bump up to college and get that opportunity that challenged me, it was a no brainer.”
