Mall owner, businesses oppose proposal to convert former Sears store to storage facility

The owner of the Johnstown Galleria, as well as owners of businesses within the mall, showed up to the Richland Township municipal building for a meeting Monday night where they voiced their opposition of the zoning board "possibly" re-zoning the former Sears store, allowing for it to become a storage facility.

Johnstown Galleria owner Leo Karruli says he's worked hard to bring attractive new businesses to the mall and believes a storage facility moving in would be detrimental to businesses that have opened up shop there.

Officials say that while connected to the Galleria, the former Sears store is a separate entity, therefore Karruli has no official say as to what type of business can move in there.

"I’m fighting for all these people; all these people could lose the business. By bringing storage over there it can make our businesses demolished. It could make the business bad for everybody,” Karruli says.

The board is set to vote on re-zoning on Wednesday.

Karruli also argued that the meeting on Wednesday was not advertised 30 days in advance, which is state law.
